Review: Greta and the Goblin King (Mylena Chronicles #1) – Chloe Jacobs

greta and the goblin kingWhile trying to save her brother from a witch’s fire four years ago, Greta was thrown in herself, falling through a portal to Mylena, a dangerous world where humans are the enemy and every ogre, ghoul, and goblin has a dark side that comes out with the eclipse.

To survive, Greta has hidden her humanity and taken the job of bounty hunter—and she’s good at what she does. So good, she’s caught the attention of Mylena’s young goblin king, the darkly enticing Isaac, who invades her dreams and undermines her will to escape.

But Greta’s not the only one looking to get out of Mylena. An ancient evil knows she’s the key to opening the portal, and with the next eclipse mere days away, every bloodthirsty creature in the realm is after her—including Isaac. If Greta fails, she and the lost boys of Mylena will die. If she succeeds, no world will be safe from what follows her back…

Rating: 3/5

Short, enjoyable read with vague references to the fairytale of Hansel and Gretel.

I did have a couple of issues with this book, namely:

1. The writing is very colloquial. It’s more fantasy than urban-fantasy, so I expected slightly more formal language, but this is just a personal preference.

2. Greta is quite childish in some ways, and overly emotional. With Isaac, it’s like i HATE YOU I HATE YOU oh you said something nice BUT I HATE YOU oh you’re trying to save me TOO BAD I HATE YOU must run away now even after you helped me out I HATE YOU.

The wave of frustration and anger consumer her, and before she’d even thought about it, she kicked him in the shin.

3. They’ve literally known each other for two weeks and Isaac’s all YOU ARE THE ONNNNNE FOR ME.

As in, the reason he becomes king:

Isaac cleared his throat and stepped back. “After talking with you, and watching you in your dreams, I was…confused. I told my father about you. My uncle overhead and threatened to give you up to Agramon. I defended you, so my father defended me..and he was killed.”

4. Slight love triangle vibe with a leader of a pack of lost human boys called Wyatt, but no one can compare to the mighty Isaac.

So yeah. I found it entertaining nevertheless, but there were definitely things that irked me.

Like I mentioned, it’s very vague in terms of a retelling – the MC’s name is Greta, her brother gets snatched by a witch, and kids are lured with the smell of delicious gingerbread cookies -but that’s pretty much as far as it goes!
