Review: Alpha & Omega Series (#1 – #3) – Patricia Briggs

alpha & omega seriesAnna never knew werewolves existed, until the night she survived a violent attack… and became one herself. After three years at the bottom of the pack, she’d learned to keep her head down and never, ever trust dominant males. Then Charles Cornick, the enforcer—and son—of the leader of the North American werewolves, came into her life.

Charles insists that not only is Anna his mate, but she is also a rare and valued Omega wolf. And it is Anna’s inner strength and calming presence that will prove invaluable as she and Charles go on the hunt in search of a rogue werewolf—a creature bound in magic so dark that it could threaten all of the pack. (Book 1 blurb)

Series Rating: 3/5

I definitely prefer the Mercy Thomson series as opposed to Alpha & Omega, but that isn’t to say it’s bad.

I really enjoy getting more insight into Charles’ family, particularly the relationship between him and his father, Bran, as well as brother Samuel. And glimpses into Mercy’s world are always awesome to have.

HOWEVER, I went on a rant in another UF review about the trope of ~fragile rape victims as female MCs~, so I’m not going to rehash my argument, but suffice to say, Anna pretty much fits this description. And obviously Charles suffers from the he-man alpha syndrome, i.e. possessive, overly-protective, all that jazz, although he tempers that knowing it will piss off Anna and that she is capable of handling herself.

There was a piece of dialogue in the first book that REALLY didn’t sit well for me – Anna tells Charles that she doesn’t like sex, after the brutalization that has occurred in her past, and he’s all “You’ll enjoy it with me”. No no no no no no.

In terms of trigger warnings, the third book is pretty graphic as well – Charles and Anna are on the case of a serial killer who does pretty gruesome things to his victims.

While I do like the relationship that develops between the two, the chemistry seems pretty lacking, unlike with Mercy & Adam.

  1. I like the Mercy Thompson series much better as well. Alpha and Omega can be slow moving sometimes. Charles is a major drawback in the series. I don’t like him nor dislike him. He’s dull, and he’s not a character I care to learn more about. It’s not a good sign when the side characters like Bran and Asil are far more interesting than one of the main characters.

    1. Yes, absolutely! I don’t dislike him, but as a main pair, Charles and Anna are not particularly compelling. I’m definitely a lot more interested in the side characters and their stories.

  2. I am TOTALLY side-eyeing that conversation with Charles. WHAT THE FUCK?!?! That’s such a turn off!! I was really looking forward to this one, but that one line kinda destroyed it :( How could I enjoy reading a character when I know he’ll say shit like that?

    1. Yup, I sort of stopped in my tracks with that one. I know how the author intended it – all “I’ll make it good for you cause we’re totally mates and shit”, but it really just came across as extremely insensitive and inappropriate.
