Review: Sweep in Peace – Ilona Andrews

19504964Dina DeMille doesn’t run your typical Bed and Breakfast. Her inn defies laws of physics, her fluffy dog is secretly a monster, and the only paying guest is a former Galactic tyrant with a price on her head. But the inn needs guests to thrive, and guests have been scarce, so when an Arbitrator shows up at Dina’s door and asks her to host a peace summit between three warring species, she jumps on the chance.

Unfortunately, for Dina, keeping the peace between Space Vampires, the Hope-Crushing Horde, and the devious Merchants of Baha-char is much easier said than done. On top of keeping her guests from murdering each other, she must find a chef, remodel the inn…and risk everything, even her life, to save the man she might fall in love with. But then it’s all in the day’s work for an Innkeeper…

Adored. I was in the mood for this kind of book, which allowed me to overcome my frustrations with the storyline -specifically, in that for our poor MC, everything that could go wrong, did go wrong.

It was so full of humour, amidst the angst and action, and I guess the more serious underlying message that the authors tried to portray about the intractability of conflict and the horrors of war.

I just think that the overall concept for this series is so great and wonderfully original – the inn that prospers off the energy of its guests and adapts to their needs, the system of magic that governs the relationship between the inn and its innkeeper, the somewhat sentient (and stroppy) nature of the inn itself. Love it.

“I saw it in a movie once,” I explained. “It was easy to visualise.”
“Was it a movie for adults?”
“It had a talking candelabra who was friends with a grumpy clock.”

There’s just so much more I want to know about the world within the book – specifically, what happened to Dina’s parents, more insight into the relationship between Sean and Dina, her brother and his job, how other inns work, etc. So many questions, which I hope will get answered in forthcoming books.

“Football is a war game of land acquisition…”

I was also a fan of the authors’ previous series, The Edge, and it’s awesome to encounter the kids from that series, now all grown up and substantially less fluffy in nature. But now I’m invested in their stories and want to know more about their lives as well. In short, my demands are just for the authors to write more and more and more, dammit. No pressure.

“It poisons the environment, it’s horribly inefficient, and it runs on fossil fuels. It requires a finite, high-pollutant resource to function. What idiot would build an engine based on a nonrenewable resource?”

  1. Humour plus action plus adventure?! THAT SOUNDS INCREDIBLE. Definitely my kinda book…and I hadn’t heard of this one before so I definitely need to run out and find it on Goodreads. :D

    1. The authors write some fabulous urban fantasy, so if that’s a genre you enjoy, I’d definitely recommend checking them out!
