Review: Fowl Language – Brian Gordon & Adulthood is a Myth – Sarah Anderson

fowl languageThe popular parenting webcomic featured on HuffPost, Buzzfeed, and Upworthy is now a book! The perfect gift for baby showers and for those already in the throes of parenting, Fowl Language: I Used To Be Cool and Do Cool Things is here to let you know that you’re not alone. Parenting is hard and often gross. Laughing about it helps.  If you liked Toddlers Are A**holes, you’ll love Fowl Language!

Parenting can be a magical journey full of bliss and wonder . . . if you’re on the right meds. For the rest of us, it’s another thing altogether. Fowl Language Comics takes an unvarnished look at the tedium and aggravation of parenting, while never forgetting that the reason we put up with those little jerks is that we love them so damn much. By poking fun at the daily struggles parents face, these cartoons help all of us feel less alone in our continual struggle to stay sane.

Brian Gordon, creator of Fowl Language Comics, has two small children of his own and knows well the trials and tribulations that go along with raising them. With more than eighteen years of experience in humorous illustration, writing, and cartooning, Brian’s visual point of view is memorable, authentic, and instantly recognizable. From Brian: “They say ‘write what you know.’ Well, I don’t know much, but I do know what it’s like to be the father of two brilliant, beautiful, bat-shit-crazy kids.”

Rating: 4/5

So wonderfully funny – and while I don’t have kids, I can totally identify with most of the situations the author depicts – either from my experiences with other people’s kids, or from my own childhood, and the way I reacted to things. I just love how the Gordon manages to infuse so much expression into the cute little duck faces!

This is definitely a feel-good book that will have you chuckling either in recognition of the situations or in relief that you won’t have to experience them.

Sarah’s Scribbles — casually drawn, perfectly on-point comics by young Brooklyn-based artist Sarah Andersen — confront head-on the horrors, anxiety, and awkwardness of modern adult life. From the agony of holding hands with a gorgeous guy to the yawning pit of hell that is the wifi gone down to the eye-watering pain of eating too-hot pizza because one cannot stand to wait for it to cool down, Sarah fearlessly documents it all.

Like the work of fellow Millennial authors Allie Brosh, Grace Helbig, and Gemma Correll, Sarah’s total frankness on extremely personal issues such as body image, self-consciousness, introversion, relationships, and bra-washing makes her comics highly relatable and consistently hilarious.

Rating: 4/5

I’ve seen so many of Sarah Andersen’s comics being shared all over FB and Tumblr – she totally sums up the female millennial experience with humour and accuracy. I had so much fun going through this collection – it’s completely irreverent and yet somehow true to life. I’d definitely recommend checking this collection out if you’re feeling like a giggle – or some undignified lady snorts!
